Useful Facts about SARS

SARS simply means Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. It can be classified as severe type of pneumonia and the known origin of it is a virus. The syndrome was first reported in China in April 2003. But because of people flying from one country to another, the spread of the virus was inevitable. It affected Taiwan, Hongkong, Japan, Singapore, Vietnam and even the United States. The virus that was discovered to be causing this is the Corona virus.

It can spread via so many ways. But the most common ways are person-to-person contact or air traveling. A person that came in contact with a person who had SARS would most likely eventually find himself in the same situation. Touching objects that might have been infected by a SARS person could also increase one’s chances of having such a disease. Also, even in terms of being in close proximity with the sick person, that could also allow for the transmission of the viruses from one person to another. Another way is through air travelling. The viruses that get released whenever someone sneezes can infect other persons when they come in contact with some bodily fluids that get released upon sneezing.

In general, the disease begins with a terribly high fever. After that, it is usually followed by other symptoms like headache, feeling of discomfort, body aches, and other unusual behaviours. This then causes dry cough and breathing trouble.

There has been no development as to the cure to this disease. There are still a lot of tests that have to be run. There are still a lot of findings that have to be studied and analysed in order to come up with the right solution to the problem. However, some doctors already recommend medicines like antibiotics and other medicinal products that seek to treat pneumonia. There are also antiviral medicines that some patients were made to take.

We still have to consider that prevention is still better than cure. It is much better to not have to undergo the syndrome at all. That is why certain things have to be remembered. Wash your hands with soap whenever you touch something dirty or anything that you are not sure is clean. In this way, you would decrease the chances of getting infected. If water for washing your hands is not available, then you can always bring an alcohol-based solution with you and apply it whenever that happens.
